Residency in Andorra

We specialise in obtaining residence permits and assisting with the transition to Andorran tax residency.

To live in Andorra on a long-term basis, you need the appropriate residence permit. The application requirements depend on the category selected and the applicant’s circumstances.

Andorra’s location between Spain and France allows you to combine a peaceful life in Andorra with business trips and travel. Holders of an Andorran residence permit benefit from special arrangements for entry and travel within these two countries, while the proximity of Barcelona and Toulouse international airports broadens the possibilities for travel across Europe.

Types of Residency

Passive Residency (without the right to work)

Passive residency allows you to reside in Andorra throughout the year. It does not grant the right to work as an employee or carry out commercial activities in the country.

Key requirements

  • Minimum physical presence in the country — 90 days per year.
  • A mandatory investment in the Andorran economy, with a minimum amount established by law.
  • A mandatory deposit with the Andorran Financial Authority (AFA, a body similar to a central bank): a fixed amount for the main applicant and an additional amount for each dependent.
  • The investment may be made through the purchase of real estate in Andorra, a contribution to the share capital of Andorran companies, or other assets permitted by law.
  • If the investment is not made in real estate, a residential lease agreement of at least 5 years is required, with the possibility of termination upon one month’s notice.
  • Proof of income: 300% of the minimum wage for the main applicant and 100% for each dependent.
  • The investment must be completed within 6 months.

Living in Andorra for more than 183 days a year allows you to obtain an Andorran tax residency certificate and file a personal income tax return.

Application process

  1. Preparation of the required documents and execution of a lease agreement or preliminary real estate purchase agreement. One of these documents must be in place before the application is submitted.
  2. Submission of the application to the Immigration Service. All applicants over 16 years of age must be present in person.
  3. Medical examination by appointment with the Immigration Service.
  4. Review of the application by the Immigration Service.
  5. Making the mandatory AFA payment.
  6. Collection of the residence card. Personal presence is not required.
  7. Registration with the relevant local municipality and submission of proof of registration within the deadlines for the selected permit category.

Active Residency (for self-employed work — compte propi)

Active residency allows you to live in Andorra throughout the year and carry out business activities through your own Andorran company.

Key requirements

  • Minimum physical presence in the country — 183 days per year.
  • Living in Andorra for more than 183 days makes you an Andorran tax resident and entails an obligation to file a personal income tax return in Andorra.
  • Incorporation of your own company in Andorra.
  • A mandatory deposit with the Andorran Financial Authority (AFA).
  • Monthly contributions to the social security system (CASS). The contribution amount is established by the government and reviewed annually.

Application process

  1. Submission of a quota reservation application to the Immigration Service. From the date of the reservation, 6 months are granted to incorporate the company and submit the residency application; after this period, the reservation is cancelled.
  2. Incorporation of the company in Andorra. The detailed procedure is described in the “Company Formation” section.
  3. Submission of the residency application, including a residential lease agreement and proof of the mandatory AFA payment.
  4. Medical examination following a favourable decision by the Immigration Service.
  5. Collection of the residence card once the procedure has been completed.
  6. Within three months of the date the immigration permit application is registered, evidence must be provided that the company’s commercial activity in Andorra has been registered and is actually being carried out.

The residence permit must be renewed: first after one year, then every two years, and after seven years of residence in Andorra, every ten years.

Documents

The following documents are required for both types of residency, among others:

  • Valid passport.
  • Criminal record certificates from the country of birth, country of citizenship and all countries of residence during the past 10 years.
  • Marriage certificate or birth certificate.
  • Lease agreement or property purchase agreement for housing in Andorra.
  • Photographs, 35 × 45 mm.
  • Employment history for the past 5 years.
  • For passive residency — proof of income and tax returns for the past 5 years.
  • Insurance policy issued by an Andorran insurance company, arranged locally.

All certificates must have been issued no more than 3 months prior to submission and must be apostilled. Translations into Catalan must be carried out by accredited translators in Andorra; we take care of coordinating the translation process.

The full list of required documents is prepared individually following an assessment of your circumstances.
